Do you have to be rich to travel?

Hi everyone! This post is again in English mostly because I want to reach as many people as possible with this subject. This is a topic I wanted to start a discussion about even before I had a blog.

So is it possible to actually let go of everything you have, pack your bags and leave for a never ending holiday?

If you are not in any way dependent on other people and/or have a serious illness, I believe it is. What I have learned from the internet forums and comment sections of the news is that most people think you have to be a millionaire to move abroad, to do a trip around the world or to just take (a) gap year(s) from your normal everyday life. I recently read an interesting topic about a 30-year-old couple who sold everything they had, left their jobs and moved abroad. When browsing the comments I could see jealousy shining through most of the comments and people telling how they could never afford doing so and how it's not something realistic.

Now I'm telling you one unexpected fact about moving abroad: you do not need a lot of money. Lets take Jani as an example: he worked in a sh***y paid job (often less than 2000€/month which in Finland is less than an average pay), he decided to save less than half a year, and voilá, he had enough money to move to Australia. Jani managed to save relatively well actually, but I also know people who have moved to Australia having 1000€ on their account. It's enough to pay for a cheap accommodation and food while you look for a job. Sometimes you don't even have to pay anything for the accommodation since there are a lot of places where you can work for the accommodation. You can also use couch surfing and other similar services to stay for free. The wildest travellers here in Australia even buy a cheap van (e.g. 500$) which is their transportation and accommodation all together.

In Jani's case he managed to find a cheap accommodation option by moving to my small flat to be able to save money. He also just simply stopped eating out, stopped paying for movies, activities and having drinks outside. He's life was not extremely amazing during that half a year, but he wanted to make that choice to be able to enjoy life later. When saving money you really have to want to save money. That way you will find ways to actually make it happen. For example: if your only way to cut expenses is by moving to a smaller flat or even a shared flat but you are not willing to do it, then maybe achieving your goal is not that important for you after all.

I actually believe it can be way more expensive to go for a one week's holiday trip than to move to another country for a longer period of time or even forever. During a week's holiday you normally spend more money on accommodation, you eat in restaurants instead of cooking yourself and you need to have the return flight ticket already paid as well. You are also paying for all your bills and rent back in you home country while you are on a holiday. Whereas when you go for a trip that's meant to last up to several years, it's not all about luxury. It's silly to think that people who travel full time would maintain a hedonistic lifestyle all the time. Me and Jani saved enough money to be able to travel for four months without a need to work. However, we often slept on free camp spots, seldom ate in restaurants or spent money to shopping or some other irrelevant activities. Of course we also had to skip many awesome activities tourists normally do when having a shorter holiday here but this way we managed to extend the holiday longer. Now we are both working full time to be able to again continue travelling.

One of our ways to save money while travelling

I dare to say we could live like this forever. We could travel around the world exploring for years. How? Simply by finding a job when the money runs out.  And what if you won't find work? Well, you might not find a job from your home country either. If you have, though, then why would you have difficulties somewhere else? If you don't speak the language it might be harder, of course, and there is greater risk of being exploited. Regardless, there are always jobs where you don't need language skills and where they aren't required. Plus in many countries you don't need to have a qualification to work in a certain field. For example in Australia anyone can work in hospitality industry whereas in Finland it's harder without the qualification.

There are also other ways of earning money than physically going to work. If you are creative enough, you will more than likely find something online. Nowadays you can earn money by writing a blog, making YouTube videos, selling your Instagram photos, making translations as a freelancer and much more. I have recently found videos of a couple who travel full time and earn their travel money by working online. According to them the Internet is full of opportunities. Check out one of their's web page here. They share many useful tips of how to begin the journey of a lifetime and how to start earning money alternatively. You can also follow both of them in Facebook.

In the end I want to highlight that my intention is not to tell how failed person you are because you haven't followed your dreams, but to show there are ways to do it without winning the lottery. Everyone makes their own choices, and the ones that really want to travel won't let money to stop them. Money is something you can always make while travelling, or something you can even live without if you are creative enough and ready to survive without some amenities. While travelling, you are actually free from some of the bills you used to pay in your home country: e.g. rent, electricity, magazine subscriptions and so on.

Finally I want to point out (especially for my mum :D) that even though I believe mine and Jani's trip could last forever or at least for years, it's most likely not going to. I miss my family and friends and want to return to Finland possibly for already next summer. But this will not, for sure, be my last long trip.

Happy travels for everyone! ;)

Päivitys tähän hetkeen

Pahoittelut hiljaisuudesta!

Me siis muutettiin ihanaan kämppään ihan ydinkeskustaan kesäkuun alussa.

State of Origin rygbymatsi hienolla kattoterassilla. State of Origin (osavaltioiden välinen rugbyottelu) on täällä todella suuri juttu ja sen huomasi myös tunnelmasta. Meidän harmiksi sekin ilta kuitenkin päättyi vähän lyhyeen Janin seuraavan päivän töiden takia. Muuten ei ole mitään eritystä mainittavaa. Tehdään nyt töitä, jotta päästään taas etenemään. Mulla alkaa taas levottomuus puskea päälle ja haluaisin jo nähdä ja kokea jotain muuta :D.

Korealainen ruoka oli ehkä parhaita uusia ruokakokeiluita ikinä. Suosittelen!

Hyvää sunnuntaita kaikille!
